“Plant breeding is directly linked to the rise of civilizations by shaping agriculture allowing societies to thrive and specialize. Breeding involves evaluating the genetic merit of individuals by discerning genetic from environment components. Lucia will discuss strategies for improved testing of genotypes using genomic selection in oats and other cereals and how to optimize allocation of testing resources to increase the rate of genetic gain. Breeding efforts have become critical for supporting sustainable development and addressing humanities grand challenges.”
